The Sandhills Community College Flyers men's golf team turned in a strong performance against a challenging NCAA Division I and Division II field this week at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by Appalachian State at The Club at Irish Creek.

Sandhills finished tied for 8th overall at +32, competing as the only NJCAA program in the tournament. The Flyers opened the event with an impressive +2 in round one before battling through the final two rounds to remain competitive in a deep field that included nationally ranked programs. Catawba, ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division II, claimed the team title at +4, followed closely by host Appalachian State (+6) and Old Dominion (+7).

Leading the way for the Flyers was Vegas Melen, who delivered an outstanding tournament to finish tied for 3rd overall at -3. Melen was consistent across all three rounds, opening with a 2-under performance and closing strong to secure one of the top individual finishes in the field.

Wyatt Beaver also turned in a solid showing for Sandhills, finishing tied for 27th at +7. Michael Switzer added a top-50 finish, tying for 47th at +12, while Sebastian Hannisdahl Haug placed tied for 61st at +16. William Dement rounded out the Flyers' scoring lineup with a 76th-place finish at +24.

The tournament field featured several notable connections to Sandhills. Former Flyer standouts Ben Read and Alex Martin, now competing for Appalachian State, finished tied for 10th and tied for 15th, respectively. Additionally, former Sandhills basketball player and coach Josh Smith was in attendance as an assistant coach for Howard University, further highlighting the program's wide-reaching impact across collegiate athletics.

Competing against a field made up entirely of NCAA Division I and Division II programs, the Flyers demonstrated their ability to contend at a high level and gained valuable experience as they continue their spring season.

Sandhills will now turn its focus to the NJCAA National Championship, scheduled for June 2–5, 2026 at Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, New York. The Flyers will enter the event looking to capture their sixth consecutive national championship.
