Sandhills Battles Through 36 Holes Against Tough Field at Irish Creek
The Sandhills Community College Flyers opened play at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Kannapolis, NC with a strong showing on day one, competing in a challenging 36-hole continuous shotgun format hosted by Appalachian State.
Facing a competitive field made up entirely of four-year programs, Sandhills stands as the only NJCAA program in the tournament. The field includes nationally recognized teams such as Catawba, currently ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Division II men's golf poll, adding to the level of competition the Flyers are facing this week.
Sandhills came out sharp in round one, firing an impressive 286 (+2) to sit in third place after the opening 18 holes. In round two, the Flyers ran into more difficulty and posted a 303, bringing their two-round total to 589 (+21) on the par-71 Irish Creek layout.
Leading the way for the Flyers was Vegas Melen, who paced Sandhills with a two-round total of 142 (+2), highlighted by an opening-round 69. His steady play anchored the lineup throughout the day.
Michael Switzer followed with a 145 (+5), putting together consistent rounds of 73 and 72 to remain a dependable contributor.
Wyatt Beaver added a 148 (+8), including a strong 71 in round one that helped propel the Flyers into the top three early in the day.
Sebastian Hannisdahl Haug carded a 154 (+12), showing solid form in the opening round with a 73 and William Dement rounded out the Flyers scoring with a 157 (+15).
Adding to the Sandhills presence at the event, Ben Read (T-3) and Alex Martin (T-23), both competing for Appalachian State, are former Flyers. Read and Martin, both standouts for the Flyers were members national championship teams that are part of the current run of five straight national championships. Read, is a two-time recipient (2023, 2024) of the Louis Meyer Brown Sr. Award for Excellence in Athletics, an honor given annually to the college's top student-athlete. The award is named in memory of Louis Meyer Brown, a passionate student-athlete and lifelong supporter of Sandhills Community College.
Also representing Sandhills ties at the tournament is Josh Smith (2017), now a coach for Howard University men's golf. Smith previously played and coached basketball at Sandhills and was also a recipient of the Louis Meyer Brown Sr. Award, highlighting his impact as a leader on campus.
Through 36 holes, the Flyers have already proven they can compete with a strong field of four-year programs. With one round remaining, Sandhills will look to recapture their first-round form and make a push up the leaderboard.
