Flyers Top Rhinos Twice to Close Regular Season
The Sandhills Community College Flyers wrapped up the regular season with a pair of 4-1 victories over Gaston College on Friday in a road doubleheader.
With the wins, the Flyers secure the No. 2 seed heading into next week's Region tournament at Carolina Legacy Courts.
Sandhills controlled both matches with strong play throughout the lineup, earning wins at the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 pairs in each contest while also picking up forfeits at the No. 5 position.
In the opening match, the Flyers set the tone early. The No. 3 pair of Jaselyn Fink and Taylor Miller delivered a dominant 21-7, 21-6 win, while Jacque Holden and Reagan Smith followed with a 21-7, 21-12 victory at No. 4. Katelyn Bunting and Reagan Malpass clinched the match at the No. 2 spot with a 21-18, 21-9 win.
Gaston's lone point came at No. 1, where Addie Key and Valeria Rivas outlasted Liz Bryson and Olivia Rosy in three sets, 21-19, 19-21, 15-2.
In the second match, Sandhills once again took control behind consistent performances across the lineup. Holden and Smith led the way with a decisive 21-3, 21-17 win at No. 4, while Bunting and Malpass remained unbeaten on the day with a 21-7, 21-9 victory at No. 2.
The No. 3 pair of Fink and Miller battled through three sets to secure a 21-12, 17-21, 15-10 win, helping the Flyers seal the match.
Gaston picked up its only point at the top spot for the second straight match, as Key and Val Rodriguez defeated Bryson and Rosy in straight sets.
Sandhills now turns its focus to postseason play. The Flyers will face Wake Tech in the opening round of the Region tournament next Friday at 1pm. With the winner advancing to take on the victor of Richard Bland and Gaston College for the championship.
