In front of a packed Hangar on Camp Day, the No. 2-ranked Sandhills Community College volleyball team delivered two statement wins on Saturday. The Flyers edged No. 6 Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute in a five-set thriller (25-13, 22-25, 25-11, 22-25, 15-11) before sweeping Division I USC Salkehatchie in straight sets (25-12, 25-20, 25-14).
Against Caldwell, the Flyers used a balanced attack and strong blocking to grind out the nationally ranked showdown. Brooke Emore led all hitters with 18 kills to go along with 15 digs, while middle blocker Katelyn Bunting was efficient with eight kills on a .368 hitting percentage and five solo blocks. Taylor Miller and Liz Bryson added eight and five kills, respectively, while Madison Scheffler chipped in four.
Setters Averi Cuddeback (24 assists, 11 digs) and Reagan Malpass (18 assists, 5 digs) kept the offense moving, while libero Olivia Rosy anchored the defense with 26 digs. The Flyers finished with 11.5 team blocks and 10 service aces in the victory.
In the afternoon match, Sandhills carried momentum into a dominant sweep of USC Salkehatchie. Emore once again paced the offense with 12 kills, while Reagan Smith (6 kills), Bunting (6 kills, 3 blocks), and Miller (5 kills, .455) kept the attack balanced. Cuddeback dished out 15 assists with three aces, and Rosy tallied 10 digs. As a team, Sandhills hit .173 and controlled the net with eight total blocks.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Flyers improve to 15-0 on the season.
Saturday also marked Camp Day, as Flyers Volleyball summer campers filled the Hangar in their camp t-shirts. The atmosphere was electric throughout both matches, boosted by giveaways provided by gameday sponsor Jersey Mike's Subs of Whispering Pines.
The Flyers are on the road for their next five contests starting with a 5pm game on Monday night at USC Lancaster before a short trip to Sanford for a Region 10 game against Central Carolina.
