Brady Childers and Koby Markham shared medalist honors as the Sandhills Community College men's golf team won the Region X Tournament Championship for the sixth year in a row at two golf courses on Saturday and Sunday.
With the victory, the Flyers qualified for the NJCAA Division III National Championship tournament in Chautauqua, N.Y. on June 5-8.
Playing at Sanford Golf Club on Saturday and at the Country Club of Whispering Pines on Sunday, Coach Gus Ulrich's squad posted team scores of 302-325-627 to finish 44 strokes ahead of Central Carolina CC the only other team in the tournament. Co-leading the Flyers for the second event in a row, Childers shot 75-80-155 and Markham shot 76-79-155.
Sunday's round at Whispering Pines was a different story after all five Flyers posted scores in the 70's on Saturday in Sanford.
"We played fairly steady the first day," Ulrich said. "Everyone struggled on Sunday. The greens were super-fast and there were some tricky pin positions. Overall our guys hung in there."
Waitley is the only member of this year's squad that played in the 2017 national tournament also held at Chautauqua Golf Club when the Flyers finished in eighth place. They were sixth the year before. Ulrich's 2014 team won the national title and two others have been runner-ups.
Childers leads the Flyers through 10 rounds of golf in five spring events with a stroke average of 75.8 followed by Markham, 76.9, Oxendine 78.5, Kraft, 78.6 and Waitley, 82.5.
