The Sandhills Community College men's golf team finished 12th among 30 teams at the rain-shortened Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship held at Paradise Point Golf Course in Jacksonville, NC last Friday and Saturday.
The Flyers were led by Hunter Oxendine who tied for 13th place individually after rounds of 70-74-144 and Brady Childers who tied for 17th with scores of 70-75-145. The team score of 288-306-594 left them only three strokes out of eighth place in the event won by Methodist.
As one of the team's in the top half of the field after two rounds, Coach Gus Ulrich's squad qualified to compete for the Gold Championship on Sunday before heavy rains on Saturday night made the two courses used for the tournament unplayable.
The first day score of 288 was only three strokes less than the best-ever Flyer 18-hole round of 285 posted by the national championship team of 2014.
"Overall I thought they played well," Ulrich said. "It was encouraging to know we can compete with so many four year schools. We have a couple of tournaments left and now we're gearing up for the national Championship (Chautauqua, N.Y.) in June.
Remaining on the schedule are the Eagles' Cup hosted by Wake Tech at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Raleigh on April 14-15 and the Region X Championship at Sanford Golf Club (round 1) the Country Club of Whispering Pines (round 2) on April 21-22.
