An even-par first round 71 by Brady Childers, and a two-under par 69 in the second by Hunter Oxendine, provided the highlights for the Sandhills men's golf team at last week's St. Andrews Fall Invitational.
In the event held at Scotch Meadows Country Club in Laurinburg on Monday and Tuesday, the Flyers finished fourth in the seven-team field of NAIA and NCAA Division III teams. Coach Gus Ulrich's squad came in only nine strokes in back of second place Methodist in the event won by the University of the Cumberlands of Williamsburg, Ky.
Oxendine made the all-tournament team after rounds of 78-69-147 that put him in fifth place individually. Childers posted scores of 71-79-150 to finish in a three-way tie for seventh place.
Also for the Flyers, Evan Johnson tied for 16th after rounds of 78-77-155, and Koby Markham, 82-78-160 and Chris Kraft, 79-81-160, were tied for 23rd place. Trent Waitley played as an individual and finished 21st with scores of 81-77-158.
"We were contenders for sure," Ulrich said. "Hunter has come a long way and has his game in pretty good shape. Brady is our most experienced golfer and on paper has the potential to be my best player. I'm very happy overall with the way we played."
The Flyers close out the fall campaign at the Region X Fall Invitational hosted by Surry CC at Cross Creek Golf Club in Mount Airy on November 4 and 5.
