The Sandhills men's golf team finished in first place by nine strokes over runner-up Surry CC at last weekend's FTCC Trojan Invitational. It was the second tournament win in a row of the fall season for the Flyers.
Sophomore Koby Markham shot rounds of 78-75-153 for Coach Gus Ulrich's squad to finish as the runner-up individually to Dylon Wooten of Surry who posted scores of 74-74-148. The five –team event was held at Baywood Golf Club in Fayetteville.
Other scores and individual finishes for the Flyers were: Hunter Oxendine 81-75-156 and Chris Kraft 76-80-156, tied for fifth place; Brady Childers 79-80-159, tied for ninth; Evan Johnson 88-77-165, 15th; Trent Waitley 83-85-168, tied for 17th.
"We played pretty steady," Ulrich said. "This team is capable of shooting in the low 300's or high 290's. What I like is that any of our six players are capable of shooting par or better at any given time. I'm proud of Koby and we're looking for another good showing next week."
The Flyer men and women will play in the St. Andrews Fall invitational at Scotch Meadows in Laurinburg on Monday and Tuesday. The Lady Flyers came in third out of six teams, and the men finished seventh in a nine team field, in last year's tournament. Cumberland (Ky.) was the women's winner and Methodist the men's winner, a year ago.
"I'm excited about that tournament because it will be a lot stiffer competition including some NCAA Division II and III schools," the coach said. "The key for us is to hopefully all jell at the same time by next spring when we go to nationals."
