Hunter Oxendine earned medalist honors with rounds of 70-80-150 and the Sandhills Community College men's golf team also won the team title at last weekend's Central Carolina CC Cougar Classic.
The Flyers' Brady Childers was the runner-up after shooting 81-72-153 in the event held at Anderson Creek Golf Club. He was followed by teammates Koby Markham (80-75-155), Chris Kraft (76-82-158) and Evan Johnson (81-80-161) as the Flyers grabbed five of the first six places in the five-team event.
They finished 82 strokes in front of second place Johnson County Community College.
"Hunter played awesome," Flyers' coach Gus Ulrich said. "I'm very tickled with his accelerated play here in a short period of time."
Oxendine earned All Mid-South Conference honors and was team captain in his last two years at Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville before graduating in 2015. He began college at UNC-Wilmington, but transferred to UNC-Pembroke to help take care of his grandmother during an illness.
He became interested in Sandhills after meeting Ulrich, who was giving lessons to his brother Spencer, the conference player of the year at Jack Britt, in 2016 and 2017. A business major, his goal is to obtain a four-year degree and eventually become a licensed electrician and run his own business.
He's seen a lot of improvement in his game since the summer.
"I was averaging about 85 back in January and after working with Gus I'm down to about a 76 average," he said in between sets of the Lady Flyers' volleyball match on Wednesday. "This has been the absolute best. We practice on Monday through Thursday and it's fantastic that there are so many great golf courses we have access to."
At one point during the first round Oxendine was three under par before posting 36-34-70.
"I couldn't get the rock to roll," he said referring to his 80 in the second round. "I struggled with the putter a little bit."
Playing as an individual, the Flyers' Trent Waitley shot 88-83-171. The team scores were: Sandhills CC 307-307-614; Johnston CC 344-352-696; Patrick Henry CC 357-351-708; Fayetteville Tech 365-347-712; Central Carolina CC 368-361-729.
Next for the Flyers is the Trojan Invitational hosted by Fayetteville Tech at Baywood Golf Club on October 14-15.
