The Sandhills Community College basketball team (8-0) takes the court for Tuesday's 7 p.m. home game against the Francis Marion junior varsity as the No. 1 ranked team in this week's NJCAA Division III National Poll.
Ranked No. 2 in the previous two weekly tallies by the NJCAA Basketball Poll Committee, the Flyers won twice last week, including a come-from-behind 91-85 victory over Division I Brunswick CC on Saturday.
Previously No. 1 Richland CC (TX) split a pair of games, including a 93-65 loss to conference rival, Hill College. Another team from Texas, Eastland CC (12-0) moved up to No. 2. while Richland (8-1) dropped to No. 3.
Herkimer CC (NY), ranked No. 9 this week, is the last team to defeat the Flyers. That occurred in the first round of the national tournament in Rochester, MN last March. Herkimer went on to win the national title.
The Flyers began this season ranked No. 7 after finishing in fifth place in Rochester. This is the first time the team has been ranked on top since the December, 11, 2012 poll. They began that season No. 1 after winning the 2011-2012 national title in Mike Apple's first season as the coach of the Flyers.
The Flyers are second in Division III with a scoring average of 102.5 points per game. In addition to the victory over Division I Brunswick, three of their wins have been against Division II squads. They split a pair of games against Francis Marion last season.
