SCC Student/Athletes and Teams Achieve on the National Level

Athletes and teams representing Sandhills Community College made another strong statement nationally in the 2018-2019 fall, winter and spring seasons by performing at high levels in their respective sports as well as academically.

In all, the eight Flyer teams produced eight NJCAA All-American athletes and 13 academic All-Americans. In addition, the men's and women's cross country, women's golf, women's track and field and volleyball teams earned the status of NJCAA Academic All-American teams by achieving a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Sophomore Daniel Taylor won the men's national cross country title in the fall and last month in Utica, NY repeated as the national champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs at the track and field championships.

The other individual national title-holder was sophomore Trey Capps who won medalist honors by six strokes three weeks ago at the men's golf championship in Chautauqua, NY.

The teams making the most noise at the national championships in their respective sports were men's cross country and men's golf with runner-up finishes. The men's basketball squad came on strong at the end of the season to win the District VII championship before finishing fifth at the national tournament.

The Lady Flyers volleyball team won 19 matches in a row on the way to a 27-6 season that ended one victory short of qualifying for the national tournament.

Taylor (men's cross country and track and field) and Brianna Spencer (women's track and field) hold the distinction of achieving 2018-2019 NJCAA All-American status for their performances both as athletes and in the classroom.

Rachael Mashburn (volleyball), and Danielle Mirovich and Alicia Dunlap (women's golf) earned Academic All-American honors for the second time. Alex Worley (men's track and field) repeated as an All-American in the decathlon.

Four members of both the women's golf and women's track and field teams received Academic All-American honors. Through the end of the spring semester 31 Sandhills student/athletes received their degrees.
